Manchester United forward Matheus Cunha led Brazil to a convincing 3-0 triumph over Haiti in their World Cup clash on Friday, 19 June, at the Philadelphia Stadium. Carlo Ancelotti’s side entered the fixture in need of a victory after being held to a draw in their opening match against Morocco.

Cunha began that earlier match on the bench before coming on in the second half to make his World Cup debut. Although he did not register a goal or an assist, the 27-year-old earned praise from the Brazilian media for his display.

Having enjoyed a strong season with Manchester United—scoring 10 goals and providing four assists in 35 appearances across all competitions—Cunha emerged as one of Michael Carrick’s key players, helping the Red Devils clinch third place in the Premier League standings.

Cunha’s versatility and effectiveness in different attacking roles made him an appealing option for Ancelotti. The Italian manager rewarded him with a spot in the starting lineup against Haiti, and Cunha fully justified the decision.

Brazil made two changes from their draw with Morocco: Danilo replaced Roger Ibanez in defence, and Cunha came in for Igor Thiago up front. The Selecao took the lead in the 23rd minute when Cunha reacted swiftly after Johny Placide parried Vinicius Junior’s shot into his path.

Replays indicated that the goal carried a touch of fortune, with Markhus Lacroix’s attempted clearance deflecting off Cunha before crossing the line. Nevertheless, the Brazilian forward demonstrated his sharp instincts again before half-time.

Running onto Vinicius Junior’s perfectly weighted through ball, Cunha delivered a superb finish into the roof of the net to double Brazil’s advantage and underline their dominance. Vinicius then added a third goal on the stroke of half-time, effectively sealing the contest against the Caribbean side.

Ederson, who is reportedly set to join Manchester United this summer, made his World Cup debut in the 81st minute when he replaced Bruno Guimaraes. The 25-year-old completed all three of his passes and even missed a promising opportunity to score.

Brazil ended the encounter with nine shots, five on target, and 57% possession. While Vinicius Junior was named man of the match, Cunha vindicated his selection ahead of Igor Thiago with an exceptional performance.

Operating as the focal point of Brazil’s attack, Cunha displayed strong chemistry with Vinicius Junior, something that will surely please Ancelotti. The United striker had 41 touches, completing 29 passes with an 86% success rate.

The former Wolverhampton Wanderers player attempted one cross, which did not reach its target, and lost possession nine times. However, his determination and work rate were evident throughout the match.

Cunha won four of his five duels, drew one foul, and also contributed defensively with one interception and two tackles. Although he recorded no successful dribbles, his two crucial goals propelled Brazil to the top of Group C.

Since joining Old Trafford, Cunha has showcased his adaptability by performing effectively both as a central striker and in supporting roles under former coach Ruben Amorim and current boss Michael Carrick. Manchester United supporters will now hope that his World Cup form continues and that he returns fit to help drive the club towards new success in the coming season.
