Manchester United legend Gary Neville has called on the club to seriously consider signing Felix Nmecha. The German midfielder has continued to impress with Borussia Dortmund and is currently representing Germany at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Nmecha was a standout performer in Germany’s opening match of the tournament against Curacao, scoring one goal and helping Die Nationalmannschaft to a commanding 7-1 victory. With the Red Devils in search of midfield reinforcements this summer, the 25-year-old has emerged as a potential target.
The Premier League giants are believed to have already secured the signing of Atalanta star Ederson to replace Casemiro. However, they remain eager to bolster their midfield further, with West Ham United’s Mateus Fernandes said to be high on their list of priorities.
Reports suggest that West Ham are demanding £85 million for Fernandes, which may prompt United to explore alternative options. Neville believes that Nmecha could be an ideal candidate to strengthen the squad.
Speaking to ITV, Neville described Nmecha as a complete midfielder but admitted that his performances at the World Cup could significantly increase his price tag. He said, “The more he plays like he did the other night, the more expensive he’ll get.”
“Right now, Manchester United are reportedly being quoted £100 million for the West Ham boy Fernandes, so they’ll need to scout around this tournament and across Europe. Nmecha looked brilliant the other night – it looked like he had absolutely everything.”
Arsenal legend Ian Wright shared Neville’s views, adding, “When you watch him, he breaks lines, gets into the box, and with Kimmich covering for him, he has that freedom. He can operate as a No.8 or No.10, and we’ve seen he can finish. You can clearly see why clubs are after him – he’s got all the attributes.”
Former Everton striker Duncan Ferguson also praised the German midfielder, saying, “He’s a very talented young player with a strong right foot. He’s athletic, covers a lot of ground, can defend, and has a good physical presence. You can see why he’s attracting interest.”
Last season, Nmecha notched up five goals and three assists in 42 appearances for Borussia Dortmund.
Germany followed up their opening win with a 2-1 victory over Ivory Coast on Saturday, where Nmecha faced Amad. Although the 23-year-old Ivorian had a quiet match, Nmecha once again impressed, giving Manchester United fans a glimpse of his potential impact at Old Trafford.
Though he did not score, Nmecha dominated the midfield, creating two major chances and achieving a 91% pass completion rate. He also contributed defensively, registering three clearances and eight tackles.
Nmecha would be an excellent addition to Manchester United’s midfield, but convincing Borussia Dortmund to part with him could prove difficult. The German international is under contract at Signal Iduna Park until 2030, and his €70 million release clause only becomes active next summer. Reports also suggest that Real Madrid are monitoring his situation, which could complicate any potential deal further.
Germany’s continued success at the 2026 FIFA World Cup could make Nmecha one of the most sought-after midfielders in Europe this summer.
