Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has renamed Suhrawardy Avenue as Gopal Mukherjee Road. In this regard, State Chief Minister Shubhendu Adhikari shared information on the social media platform ‘X’. He welcomed this step and called it an important initiative towards correcting a historical mistake.
Chief Minister Adhikari said that I praise the historic decision taken by Kolkata Municipal Corporation on the special occasion of West Bengal Day on Saturday, which will be helpful in correcting a historical mistake. Haraverdi Avenue will now be named Gopal Mukherjee Road.
Shubhendu Adhikari further said that for years a major road in Kolkata was named after a person who was accused of abusing power and massacring innocent people for political gains. He said that renaming this road after Shri Gopal Mukherjee is an important step towards historical justice.
CM Adhikari said, Gopal Mukherjee was a fearless personality, who played a leading role in protecting thousands of innocent people in difficult times. The official said that now the time has come for West Bengal to remember its real heroes, give them due respect and give due place to their contribution.
CM Shubhendu Adhikari also targeted the previous Congress, Left and Trinamool Congress governments. He said that those who have been accused of being to the partition of Bengal and the genocide of Hindus, were glorified in the name of secularism for decades. According to him, having a road named after Suhrawardy in the center of Kolkata was like refreshing the old wounds of the people of Bengal. The official said renaming the road after Gopal Mukherjee is a historic reform and gives due respect to someone whom he considers a true savior of the society. He called it a true tribute to the heroes and martyrs.
