33 Games, 100 Goals! World Cup 2026 scripts highest-scoring blitz since 1958 edition

The 2026 FIFA World Cup has officially turned into a breathless goal-fest, shattering a 68-year-old record to become the fastest edition of the global tournament to hit the 100-goal milestone since 1958.
The mega tournament achieved the spectacular feat in just 33 matches. The historic 100th goal was smashed home by Liverpool star Cody Gakpo during the Netherlands' ruthless 5-1 demolition of Sweden in Houston on Saturday.
This lightning-fast goal rate has eclipsed modern tournament benchmarks, easily beating the 36-game marks set in both 1982 and 2014, as well as the 38 matches required in 1978 and 1994. The all-time world record still securely belongs to the legendary 1954 World Cup in Switzerland, where it took a mere 20 games to cross the century mark.
Mexico's Julian Quinones had opened the scoring for this tournament in a 2-0 win over South Africa on June 12. However, it was the rampant Dutch side that stole the headlines by scoring the milestone goal. By finding the back of the net five times, the Netherlands also became only the eighth nation in football history to cross 100 all-time World Cup goals, joining heavyweights like Brazil, Germany, and Argentina.
The Dutch masterclass began early, with Brian Brobbey tapping in a low cross from Gakpo in just the fifth minute. Brobbey doubled his tally in the 17th minute, poking home a Denzel Dumfries cross. Gakpo then took over in the second half, scoring twice in seven minutes, before Crysencio Summerville added a late fifth to complete Sweden's misery.
Meanwhile, history was being written simultaneously in Mexico, where Japan’s commanding 4-0 thrashing of Tunisia at the Monterrey Stadium marked the 1,000th official match in FIFA World Cup history .
With 48 teams competing across North America in 12 groups, the expanded format is delivering top-tier drama. The top two teams from each group, along with the eight best third-place finishers, will advance to the new Round of 32 knockout stage.
