Manchester United have made significant progress in their pursuit of a Premier League midfielder, even as Arsenal are pushing ahead with their own attempts to hijack a separate transfer deal.

Following a third-place finish in the league last season, Michael Carrick’s side are determined to strengthen their midfield department. Although there are other areas that need reinforcement, bolstering the centre of the park remains the top priority.

United are expected to bring in at least two midfielders this summer, with only four senior players currently available to operate in central midfield.

Mateus Fernandes agrees personal terms

Mateus Fernandes is one of United’s key targets and among the most expensive options they are monitoring. The West Ham United midfielder, valued at £80 million, has attracted strong interest. However, United are reportedly confident of negotiating a reduction in the fee.

Despite West Ham holding firm on their valuation, United have already settled personal terms with Fernandes and are looking to finalise the transfer for around £65 million. The club believe progress has been made and that a deal could be reached soon.

Arsenal set for transfer hijack

United are also keeping tabs on Crysencio Summerville, another West Ham player, with initial contact already made regarding a potential move. However, Arsenal may complicate matters, as reports indicate the Gunners have joined the race for the winger.

With Gabriel Martinelli’s position under review, Arsenal are actively exploring attacking reinforcements, and Summerville has emerged as a leading candidate. The North London side are assessing multiple forward options, but their interest in Summerville could pose a challenge for United’s transfer plans.

Benjamin Sesko staying put

Meanwhile, Manchester United are determined to retain Benjamin Sesko amid interest from Barcelona and Atletico Madrid. The striker, who enjoyed an impressive debut season at Old Trafford, has drawn enquiries from representatives linked to both Spanish giants.

However, sources close to United insist that the club have no intention of selling Sesko. The 11-goal forward was the most prolific scorer in the Premier League during the second half of the campaign, a statistic that underlines his growing importance to the team.

United have given no encouragement to either Atletico or Barcelona, making it clear that the player will remain part of Carrick’s plans for the upcoming season. As a result, both clubs are expected to turn their attention to alternative targets.
