SIM Blocking Technique: Losing a phone or SIM card raises concerns about data theft or misuse, but you can block it immediately using the 'Sanchar Saathi' portal.
SIM Blocking: When a smartphone or SIM card is lost or stolen, the biggest concern is the potential misuse of associated data. In today's digital era, everything from bank accounts and UPI apps to social media platforms is linked to mobile numbers. Consequently, if a lost SIM card falls into the wrong hands, it could be used for financial fraud or identity theft.
Since most online services today rely on One-Time Passwords (OTPs) sent to registered mobile numbers, blocking a lost SIM card should be your top priority. Fortunately, telecom operators and the Government of India provide various ways to instantly block lost SIM cards and disable stolen smartphones.
What to do first if your SIM card is stolen?
First, file an FIR (online or offline) regarding the theft or loss of the phone and keep a digital copy of it.
Immediately obtain a duplicate SIM card for your lost number from a nearby telecom store, as OTP verification will be required on the portal.
Keep a digital copy of one of the following documents handy: Aadhaar card, PAN card, Voter ID card, or driving license. If available, also keep the original purchase bill of the mobile phone.
Sanchar Saathi Portal
The Government of India's 'Sanchar Saathi' portal allows you to instantly block your lost or stolen mobile phone and SIM card. Operated by the Department of Telecommunications, this portal is connected to all telecom networks across the country.
Online blocking process
First, visit the official portal: sancharsaathi.gov.in.
On the homepage, under the 'Citizen Centric Services' section, click on the 'Block Your Lost/Stolen Mobile' option.
A red-colored form will then appear on your screen. You will be asked to enter details such as the mobile phone owner's information, device specifications, the location where the phone was lost, the nearest police station, and the FIR number.
Next, enter the OTP received on your newly activated number, check the declaration box, and finally, click 'Submit'.
Alternatively, you can also have your SIM blocked by calling customer care.
What happens next?
After submission, a unique request ID will appear on the screen, which you can use to check the status of your complaint. Once the form is submitted on the Sanchar Saathi portal, your device is blocked within the next 24 hours. Essentially, after the complaint is registered, the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) blocks your phone's IMEI numbers across all cellular network providers nationwide. Consequently, no matter what new SIM card the thief inserts, the phone will not receive any signal. The IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) is a unique identification number for your phone; it is a 15-digit code.
