12 Indians among 13 killed in Qatar gas plant explosion

Doha: Twelve Indians were among the 13 people killed in an explosion at a gas facility in Qatar’s Ras Laffan Industrial City, the Indian Embassy in Doha said on Monday, June 22.

In a statement posted on X, the embassy said Qatari authorities had confirmed the deaths of 12 Indian nationals and expressed condolences to the bereaved families.

The mission also said all those injured in the incident were in stable condition and receiving appropriate medical treatment.

It added that embassy officials were working closely with Qatari authorities to provide assistance to affected Indian nationals and their families. Efforts were also under way to facilitate the repatriation of the mortal remains of those killed.

Blast at Barzan facility

The confirmation came a day after an explosion at the Barzan local gas supply facility in Ras Laffan Industrial City, Qatar’s main energy hub.

According to Qatari authorities, the blast occurred at around 10:30 pm on Sunday, June 21, and resulted in 13 deaths and 66 injuries. Emergency response teams later brought the fire under control.

Qatar’s Energy Minister Saad Sherida al-Kaabi described the incident as an accident and said there was no indication of sabotage or any hostile activity.

Authorities said the affected facility supplies the domestic market and that the incident had no impact on Qatar’s liquefied natural gas export operations.

A technical investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the explosion.

Gulf countries express solidarity with Qatar

Saudi Arabia, Oman, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Kuwait issued statements expressing solidarity with Qatar following the explosion and extended condolences to the families of those killed.

Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs conveyed the Kingdom’s condolences to Qatar and reaffirmed its support for the country as it responds to the incident.

Oman’s Foreign Ministry expressed solidarity with Qatar and its people, wishing those injured a speedy recovery.

The UAE’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs also conveyed its support for Qatar and expressed hope for the recovery of those injured in the explosion.

Kuwait’s Foreign Ministry extended its sympathies to the government and people of Qatar, as well as to the families of the victims, following the incident at the liquefied natural gas facility in Ras Laffan Industrial City.
