RB Leipzig have officially announced the appointment of Martin Demichelis as their new head coach, following a rapid search for Ole Werner’s replacement. The former Manchester City and Bayern Munich centre-back takes charge with strong support from Jurgen Klopp and the club’s top management.

Leipzig act swiftly to secure Demichelis

The Bundesliga outfit moved quickly to fill their managerial vacancy, confirming Demichelis as the man to guide their future. The 45-year-old Argentine has signed a contract lasting until June 2028, ushering in a new era for the Red Bulls. The decision comes only five days after Leipzig parted company with previous boss Ole Werner.

To finalise the deal, Leipzig had to activate a release clause in Demichelis’ contract with Mallorca, where he had recently signed an extension just three weeks earlier. With prior managerial experience in Spain, Mexico, and Argentina, the ex-defender brings a wealth of international knowledge that Leipzig see as a valuable asset.

Klopp’s influence behind Leipzig’s new leadership

The coaching change follows growing dissatisfaction from Red Bull chief Jurgen Klopp, who reportedly questioned Werner’s long-term potential on the international stage. As per German outlet Bild, Klopp played a central role in the decision to dismiss Werner after tensions between the two intensified in recent months.

Demichelis was Klopp’s top choice to take charge, with the pair already enjoying a close friendship built through their mutual love of padel tennis in Mallorca. Klopp has been particularly impressed by Demichelis’ emphasis on high-pressing, energetic football—an approach that aligns seamlessly with the Red Bull group’s trademark playing style.

Financial prudence meets tactical ambition

From a financial standpoint, the move also represents a smart decision for Leipzig ahead of the upcoming season. Demichelis has agreed to a base salary of around €2 million, slightly below the €2.5 million package previously earned by Werner.

The new manager was persuaded by Leipzig’s long-term sporting project and the promising pool of young talent at his disposal. “I want to build a team that plays brave, intense, and entertaining football,” Demichelis stated. “Facing Europe’s best sides is a fantastic challenge.”

Schafer praises Demichelis’ global coaching experience

Leipzig’s managing director for sport, Marcel Schafer, offered strong support for the appointment, underlining Demichelis’ extensive coaching experience across three continents. Schafer believes this broad global exposure fits perfectly with Leipzig’s strategic international objectives.

“Martín combines a defined football philosophy with intensity and exceptional knowledge,” Schafer said during the official unveiling. He expressed full confidence that the former Argentina international will inject renewed energy into the team and accelerate the club’s continued progress.
