Barcelona are actively seeking to strengthen their attacking options following Robert Lewandowski’s exit, with Harry Kane emerging as a key name under evaluation. The England skipper’s contract situation at Bayern Munich is being closely observed, as discussions over the length of a potential extension have yet to reach a consensus.

Barcelona sound out Kane’s interest

As reported by Sport, the Catalan club have made an unexpected enquiry to assess Kane’s willingness to trade the Bundesliga for La Liga. Although no formal bid has been tabled, Barcelona officials have contacted the striker’s representatives to gauge his openness to a move to the Spotify Camp Nou. The England captain has become one of Barca’s most sought-after targets in the wake of Lewandowski’s departure.

Kane’s impressive displays at the World Cup, coupled with his prolific form for Bayern Munich, have only heightened Barcelona’s admiration for the forward, despite him being 32 years old. However, initial responses received by the club indicate that the situation remains “cold”, with Kane understood to be very content with life in Munich.

Contract impasse at Bayern Munich

Barcelona’s faint hope of landing Kane stems from an ongoing disagreement between the player and Bayern’s management over the terms of a new deal. His current contract runs until 2027, and although both sides are open to renewal, there is a significant gap regarding the duration. Kane is reportedly pushing for a contract that would secure his stay until 2030, while Bayern are only willing to offer an additional two-year extension.

Kane joined Bayern Munich in 2023 for a transfer fee close to €100 million and currently earns around €25 million annually. Should no compromise be reached following his World Cup campaign, his future could become more uncertain. Barcelona are closely monitoring the situation in case this contract tension opens a genuine opportunity to lure the striker away from Germany.

Julian Alvarez remains top priority

Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez continues to be the main target for Barcelona’s sporting director Deco and head coach Hansi Flick. Unlike the feedback from Kane’s camp, the Argentine has expressed strong interest in making a move to Camp Nou. The club’s hierarchy believes Alvarez perfectly fits Flick’s tactical approach, combining lethal finishing with relentless pressing and intelligent link-up play.

The search for a new number nine is driven by Flick’s system requirements. After completing the signing of Anthony Gordon, the German manager has emphasised that he will not deviate from his footballing philosophy, which demands front-line players who contribute actively to the team’s pressing structure. Alvarez is viewed as the most practical and tactically compatible option currently available on the market.

Kane focused on World Cup success

At present, Kane remains fully concentrated on guiding England through their World Cup campaign. He aims to continue his excellent form against Ghana and add to his impressive World Cup record, having taken his tournament tally to 10 goals with a brace against Croatia.

The Bayern Munich striker’s recent double equalled Gary Lineker’s long-standing record as England’s highest goal scorer in World Cup history. Kane now has a golden opportunity to surpass Lineker and claim the record outright.
