Norwegian superstar Erling Haaland simply cannot stop finding the net, as the Manchester City striker guided his nation closer to a third-ever appearance in the World Cup knockout rounds.

The opening half proved frustrating for Haaland, even though Norway held a one-goal advantage at the interval. The 25-year-old was repeatedly denied by Senegal goalkeeper Édouard Mendy and couldn’t manage to score before the break.

However, true to his reputation at both club and international level, Haaland burst into life after the restart, completing a brace with strikes in the 48th and 58th minutes. His goals came on either side of a missed opportunity from Senegal’s Ismaïla Sarr, sealing Norway’s commanding position in the match.

With those two goals, Haaland has now amassed an extraordinary 59 goals in just 52 appearances for Norway. He continues to cement his place among the greatest forwards in football history, while also becoming Norway’s all-time top scorer in men’s World Cup tournaments—surpassing Kjetil Rekdal, who had scored once each in USA 1994 and France 1998.

Born in Leeds, England, Haaland has now joined an exclusive list of just six players in World Cup history to have scored multiple goals in each of their first two tournament appearances. This elite group includes Argentina’s Guillermo Stábile, Hungary’s Sándor Kocsis, France’s Just Fontaine, Poland’s Grzegorz Lato, and current England captain Harry Kane.

According to StatMuse, Haaland has now scored at least twice in each of his last six competitive matches for Norway and has found the net in all of his last 12 competitive international games. Opta further notes that he has scored in 18 of his last 21 competitive national team fixtures—an astonishing level of consistency.

Adding to his list of achievements, StatMuse also reports that Haaland now holds the best goal-per-match ratio of any player with 50 or more international goals over the past century.

Norway’s next challenge sees them face Kylian Mbappé and France in a decisive Group I encounter. Both Haaland and Mbappé currently have four goals each, just one behind tournament leader Lionel Messi. The upcoming match promises to intensify the Golden Boot race that football fans around the world have been eagerly anticipating.
