Manchester United have enjoyed an impressive resurgence in 2026, finishing third in the Premier League and securing their return to the UEFA Champions League. This qualification marks an important milestone for the Red Devils as they plan their summer transfer activities.
Under the guidance of Michael Carrick, United recorded 12 wins and only two defeats in 17 matches, showcasing consistency and tactical maturity. However, with Champions League football returning to Old Trafford next season and a packed fixture schedule ahead, the club’s recruitment team must strengthen the squad strategically.
Midfield additions remain a key focus following Casemiro’s departure. Reports indicate that United have already completed the signing of Ederson from Atalanta. While further reinforcements in midfield are expected, other positions are also under consideration before the new campaign begins.
According to recent updates, INEOS may look to enhance depth at left-back. Although Luke Shaw has been a dependable performer under Carrick and previously impressed as a left-sided centre-back under Amorim, he will turn 31 next month and is contracted until 2027.
Despite Shaw’s injury-free campaign, his history of fitness issues could prompt United to explore alternative options. A report shared by The Peoples Person claims that Maxi Araujo has been identified as a potential target to strengthen the left-back position this summer.
The 26-year-old Uruguayan has delivered an excellent season for Sporting, contributing seven goals and six assists across 47 appearances, including 42 starts. His pace, attacking vision, and relentless work rate make him a suitable long-term successor to Shaw at Old Trafford. Moreover, his age profile fits INEOS’s current recruitment strategy focused on players entering their prime years.
Previous reports suggest that Manchester United have already initiated contact with Araujo’s representatives. The Uruguay international is currently competing at the FIFA World Cup, where he has scored two goals and provided one assist in two matches, further underlining his quality. Following Uruguay’s 2-2 draw with Cape Verde earlier this week, Araujo spoke about his future.
In an interview with Antena 1, as reported by Sport Witness, Araujo stated, “I am very happy at Sporting, but you never know what will happen.” His comments signal a more cautious stance compared to earlier remarks, where he expressed a strong desire to remain at Estadio Jose Alvalade.
During the same match, Sporting team-mate Ivan Fresneda was present in the stands, and Araujo expressed his delight at seeing him. He said, “I was happy to speak with Fresneda, I am grateful he was here and I love playing with him. I hope we can play together for a long time.”
Araujo remains under contract with Sporting until 2029, meaning the Portuguese side are under no immediate pressure to sell. Nevertheless, reports indicate that the club is already working on a new contract extension to secure his future.
With Tyrell Malacia set to depart as a free agent this summer and Patrick Dorgu being utilised further up the pitch by Carrick, signing a new left-back has become a growing priority for United. While Araujo appears to be an ideal candidate, any move would depend on negotiating a transfer fee below his €80 million release clause.
