Manchester City and Argentina great Sergio Aguero has voiced strong support for Julian Alvarez’s potential transfer to Barcelona, describing his fellow countryman as an ideal match for the Catalan giants. The former striker believes that the versatile attacker would flourish at Camp Nou amid reports suggesting that Alvarez has submitted a formal transfer request.
Aguero praises Alvarez as a perfect Barcelona addition
The ex-Barcelona and Atletico Madrid forward shared his thoughts on the matter during an appearance on the streaming show Jijantes. Aguero, known affectionately as "Kun," expressed his belief that the 26-year-old would be an excellent fit for Hansi Flick’s attacking setup.
“Julian would fit into many teams, but he would fit in spectacularly at Barça given his playing style. He’s a world-class footballer – someone who can play anywhere across the front line and pose a constant attacking threat,” Aguero remarked.
He went on to highlight Alvarez’s tactical adaptability, explaining: “It’s fantastic to have players like that. He’s an attacking player – winger, forward, attacking midfielder … He’s a versatile option; you can rely on him when others are injured.”
Alvarez’s open transfer request
Alvarez recently made headlines after publicly requesting to leave Atletico Madrid’s Metropolitano Stadium, with Barcelona emerging as his preferred destination. The Argentine striker, who joined the Rojiblancos from Manchester City in 2024, is reportedly eager for a new challenge.
Reports from Spain suggest growing optimism within the Barcelona camp following Alvarez’s decision to publicly declare his intentions.
During the 2026 World Cup, Aguero defended Alvarez’s honesty in addressing his situation. “The player had no choice but to be sincere, to be honest. He said that he met with the club and that both sides agreed a transfer would be the best solution,” Aguero explained.
The forward himself reiterated his position in a recent interview, stating: “I think the best thing for everyone is a transfer. I want to fulfil my dream.”
Challenges surrounding the release clause
Despite Alvarez’s desire to leave, Atletico Madrid are renowned for their tough negotiating stance and have reportedly referred to his enormous €500 million (£431m/$569m) release clause.
Aguero acknowledged that the ultimate decision rests with the Atletico hierarchy but hinted that their rigid public position could be part of a broader negotiation tactic.
“With that release clause, the decision lies with the club. The club will decide whether or not to sell you – and, to be fair, he told the truth to them, which is the best way to handle it,” Aguero commented.
He further added that while no club wants to admit they are open to losing a star player, keeping someone who is unhappy can negatively affect the team’s morale and atmosphere.
Aguero calls for a constructive resolution
Aguero concluded by urging Atletico Madrid to facilitate Alvarez’s departure if the relationship between player and club has deteriorated. “If I were part of the club and a player wasn’t happy – whether because of the city, his teammates, the coach, or management – if he wasn’t comfortable, the best thing to do would be to find a solution and let him go. You can’t have a player staying all year unhappy and spreading negative energy. If he’s uncomfortable, the club should help him move on; that’s how I see it,” Aguero stated.
