England will face Ghana on Tuesday as they aim for a second consecutive win at the World Cup and secure a spot in the last 32.
Thomas Tuchel’s team enters the fixture full of confidence following a strong second-half showing in their 4-2 victory over Croatia last week.
England benefitted from a penalty — initially saved but retaken and successfully converted by Harry Kane — in their match against Croatia. But who will be the referee for their upcoming encounter with Ghana?
The match will be officiated by Said Martinez, a referee from the CONCACAF federation, who has been assigned to oversee the England vs Ghana fixture.
The Honduran official will manage the Group L game, marking only his second appearance at a World Cup.
Earlier in the tournament, the 34-year-old Martinez took charge of the 1-1 draw between Qatar and Switzerland.
That match drew some controversy when Switzerland were awarded a penalty after Remo Freuler appeared to be fouled while in an offside position.
After a review by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), the penalty decision stood, and Breel Embolo successfully converted the spot-kick.
England are the favourites to claim victory over Ghana in Boston, where the match will take place.
Martinez, who has been on FIFA’s list of international referees since 2017, issued three yellow cards during the Qatar vs Switzerland game.
He became the youngest referee in the history of the Honduran top division when he officiated his first senior match at the age of 18, all while pursuing a degree in mathematics at university.
Since then, Martinez has been a regular presence in international fixtures under the CONCACAF banner, earning his selection for the World Cup.
Assisting him in the match will be his compatriots Walter Lopez and Christian Ramirez as assistant referees.
China’s Ning Ma will serve as the fourth official, while Mexico’s Guillermo Pacheco has been appointed as the VAR for the game.
