Atletico Madrid have reportedly dismissed any possibility of selling Julian Alvarez to their La Liga rivals Barcelona, citing reasons of honour. Instead, the Spanish club has shifted its interest towards the Premier League, where they are exploring an ambitious swap deal with Arsenal that could see Viktor Gyokeres moving to Madrid.

Atletico Madrid refuse to deal with Barcelona

Senior officials at the Metropolitano Stadium have completely redefined their approach regarding the unsettled Argentina international. Following weeks of speculation linking Alvarez with a move to Catalonia, the club leadership has decided to close that option entirely, according to reports from COPE. Atletico are unwilling to engage in negotiations with Barcelona and have instead turned their attention to London, aiming to finalise a complex player-plus-cash exchange before the summer transfer window shuts.

Firm position on valuation

Sources in Spain indicate that Atletico Madrid are ready to adopt a strict stance on Alvarez’s valuation, refusing to let the player leave unless foreign bidders meet their high asking price. Journalist Manolo Lama has reported that the Rojiblancos have ruled out any sale to Barcelona as a “matter of honour”. The club’s position remains clear: “they are prepared to keep Julian Alvarez at the club, even if he doesn’t play.”

Ambitious swap proposal in place

The potential deal would involve Alvarez joining Arsenal in exchange for Viktor Gyokeres, along with a significant cash payment. The Swedish striker would head to Madrid, while Arsenal would add the Argentine attacker to their squad. The total financial adjustment involved in the deal is expected to be around €60 million, in addition to the player swap. Atletico’s sporting department views the acquisition of Gyokeres as a key step in securing a “true, traditional centre-forward” for their squad.

Restructuring the attacking unit

Bringing in a classic No.9 like Gyokeres could initiate immediate changes in Atletico Madrid’s forward line ahead of the upcoming season. The move would allow the club to entertain offers for Alexander Sorloth, who currently fills a similar role in Diego Simeone’s system. Such a reshuffle would then enable Simeone to pursue a more versatile, mobile supporting striker to complement the team’s new attacking setup.
