There is no end to the troubles for Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Abhishek Banerjee. Calcutta High Court has postponed to Monday next week the hearing on the petition of the TMC leader, in which he had sought permission to go abroad for medical reasons. This matter was mentioned before the bench of Justice Saugata Bhattacharya during the day, but he refused to hear it immediately and said that this petition should be discussed next week.
Abhishek wants to go abroad for a week for eye treatment. He had filed a petition in the High Court yesterday on Tuesday for permission to go abroad. Abhishek's lawyer requested the judge to hear his client's application soon. But Justice Bhattacharya rejected this application. He clarified that the listing will be according to the number of Abhishek's cases in the list. The hearing will not be held soon.
In her petition, Banerjee had asked the court to relax an old order. Under this order, he cannot leave the country without the approval of the court. He requested the court to modify this order so that he can go abroad for the treatment of his eye due to the injury.
MP Abhishek has already gone abroad several times for eye treatment. On 19 October 2016, while returning from a party event in Murshidabad, his car met with an accident on the Durgapur Expressway near Singur in Hooghly. In this accident, Trinamool's second biggest leader Abhishek suffered serious injuries under his left eye and his eye bone was broken.
Abhishek Banerjee is continuously suffering from eye problems since the car accident. Before deciding to undergo special surgery and medical care abroad, he had undergone treatment in several hospitals in the country. Apart from Hyderabad, he has also gone to Dubai, Singapore and America for treatment. He has also undergone several surgeries on his left eye.
After the crushing defeat of TMC and the landslide victory of BJP in the West Bengal elections, cases are being continuously taken against the leaders of Trinamool and the party. A complaint was lodged against Abhishek on 15 May. A person resident of Bagihati in North Kolkata had handed over several video clips to the police. His allegation was that the things said by the TMC MP during public speeches during the election campaign were very provocative.
The court had taken cognizance of these claims and asked for further investigation into the matter. In this case, on May 22, the court had given Abhishek protection from arrest till July 31 or further orders. However, the bench had made it necessary to take prior approval for foreign travel. Besides, the TMC MP was also instructed to inform his investigating officer at least 48 hours before the journey.
