The group stage of the World Cup is progressing rapidly, and several nations already know that their journey in this tournament is coming to an end.
The competition has delivered exciting contests and unexpected outcomes, keeping fans around the world engaged as the matches unfold.
As we approach the close of matchweek two and prepare for the decisive final round of group fixtures, it’s time to take stock of the teams whose fate has already been sealed.
While a few of the leading sides have secured their spots in the next round, others have suffered back-to-back defeats and will soon be heading home.
Any team that has lost both of its opening group matches is almost certainly eliminated from contention. That means the following four nations are officially out of the World Cup:
Haiti (Group C)
Turkey (Group D)
Tunisia (Group F)
Jordan (Group J)
Haiti fell to Scotland in their opening fixture and were subsequently beaten by Brazil. As a result, they sit at the bottom of Group C and will exit the competition following their third match.
In a surprising development, Turkey have endured a disappointing campaign, losing their first two encounters against Australia and Paraguay, confirming their elimination from the tournament.
Tunisia have arguably been the weakest side of the tournament so far. After dismissing their manager following the opening match, they suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of Japan. With head-to-head records determining the standings, Tunisia are certain to finish bottom of Group F.
Jordan have also been knocked out after defeats to Austria and Algeria in Group J. Their upcoming clash against defending champions Argentina is unlikely to change their fortunes.
There are, however, two exceptions to the “two defeats and out” rule — Senegal and Iraq — both of whom have lost their first two matches but still have a slim chance of progressing.
The Group I duo will face each other in their final match, and the winner could still qualify as one of the best third-placed teams.
Meanwhile, nations that have only managed a single point from their first two outings will need a strong performance in their final group game to keep their qualification hopes alive.
Teams such as Czechia and South Africa (both Group A), Bosnia and Qatar (both Group B), Ecuador and Curacao (both Group E), New Zealand (Group G), and Saudi Arabia (Group H) are all at risk of elimination after their third match.
On a brighter note, a few nations have already secured their qualification for the round of 32.
The teams that have confirmed their place in the next round are:
Mexico (Group A)
USA (Group D)
Germany (Group E)
France (Group I)
Norway (Group I)
Argentina (Group J)
