Cristiano Ronaldo hit back at his critics with a bold statement after scoring a record-breaking pair of goals for Portugal at the World Cup, looking straight into the camera and declaring, “I’m back, I’m back.”

The 41-year-old forward, who had faced heavy criticism following a subdued showing against DR Congo, delivered a superb performance as Portugal thrashed Uzbekistan 5-0 on Tuesday.

With this brace, Ronaldo became the first footballer in history to score in six different World Cups, having made his debut in the tournament back in 2006.

After the final whistle in Houston, the Portugal captain sent his pointed message to the cameras, marking his arrival at the 2026 World Cup and joining the likes of Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe, and Harry Kane in the early Golden Boot race.

Speaking on FOX, former Sweden captain Zlatan Ibrahimovic commented, “His message... I thought he never left.”

France’s World Cup winner Thierry Henry added, “We talked about how he was going to score today. It was an easy game, get behind the defence... just another day at the office.”

Former USA international Alexi Lalas noted, “He hears everything. Sometimes it’s good for motivation, and he’s a performer — he showed up and delivered. Perspective is important: it’s a moment to celebrate, but also consider who they played. Martinez must find the right balance; tougher challenges are ahead.”

Joao Cancelo created Ronaldo’s opening goal with a brilliant run down the right wing before cutting a low cross into the box. The veteran forward pounced instinctively, firing a first-time shot from close range that nestled just inside the near post to give Portugal the lead.

Ronaldo’s second goal came from a neat assist by Bruno Fernandes. Timing his run perfectly into the right side of the penalty area, Ronaldo guided a low shot into the far corner for his brace.

Ronaldo first appeared at a World Cup in 2006 at the age of 21, scoring once as Portugal reached the semi-finals. He went on to score once in both the 2010 and 2014 tournaments before netting four times in 2018. At the 2022 edition, he added another goal as Portugal advanced to the quarter-finals.

Despite never scoring in a World Cup knockout match or appearing in a final, Ronaldo became only the second player ever to feature in six World Cups — a day after rival Lionel Messi became the first. Messi celebrated that milestone with his first-ever World Cup hat-trick, equalling Miroslav Klose’s all-time scoring record in Argentina’s 3-0 win over Algeria in Kansas City.

Ronaldo’s tally of 10 World Cup goals still trails Messi’s total, but he could surpass Germany’s Lothar Matthaus for the second-most appearances in World Cup history if Portugal reach the knockout rounds of this expanded 48-team tournament.

Praise quickly followed Ronaldo’s record-breaking display. Former Manchester United teammate Owen Hargreaves remarked, “Cristiano delivers — when he gets service, he delivers. Everywhere he’s been, he’s done that. It’s only nine minutes in, but the game plan worked. There’s more urgency, players running behind, and Cristiano has support closer to him. There’s so much firepower.”
