Carlos Queiroz has shed light on his heated exchange with Jude Bellingham during Ghana’s goalless draw with England at the 2026 World Cup. The England star was seen being pulled away from the Ghana coach as tempers flared just before half-time, though England manager Thomas Tuchel later dismissed suggestions that Ghana had managed to unsettle his players.

Fiery moment before half-time

The incident took place moments before the break when Bellingham fouled Jerome Opoku right in front of the Ghana dugout. The challenge sparked an animated response from Queiroz, who exchanged words with the midfielder before being restrained by members of his Ghana backroom staff. Meanwhile, Morgan Rogers stepped in to calm his England team-mate and defuse the situation.

‘Football is for brave people’

When asked about the confrontation, Queiroz explained: “He reacted badly, using some unpleasant words, and that’s how it all started. My only intention was to ask him to calm down after that tackle. It could have easily become a second yellow or even a red card because he went in hard against my player.”

Pressed further on what Bellingham had said, the 73-year-old coach added: “It wasn’t anything major. It was just a heated moment, and he used a word that doesn’t belong in the book of life. That can spark some fire, but as professionals, we quickly controlled it. Football is a game for courageous people – not for those who prefer to dance in tuxedos.”

Tuchel stands by Bellingham

England manager Thomas Tuchel firmly defended his player’s actions and maintained that the altercation had no negative impact on the team. “No one got under our skin,” Tuchel stated. “These things happen. It was an emotional exchange, and Jude stood up for himself and the team. There’s no issue there. We were calm at half-time. We understand that emotions are part of football, but we made sure not to get distracted by things that don’t help us. That was our focus, and we stayed composed.”

What lies ahead?

Bellingham was replaced by Rogers in the second half as England pressed for a decisive goal, but Ghana’s defence proved resilient and the match ended in a stalemate. The result keeps the Three Lions at the top of Group L with four points, narrowly ahead of Ghana on goal difference. Croatia sit third after their 1-0 win over Panama. England now only need to avoid defeat against Panama in their final group fixture to secure a place in the round of 32.
