Hayley Matthews Wicket Controversy: A major umpiring controversy was seen in the match played between England and West Indies in the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026. West Indies captain and star all-rounder Hayley Mathews became the victim of a shocking decision by the TV umpire during the match played at Lord's, after which she expressed her strong displeasure and disappointment on the field itself. In fact, despite a clear gap being visible between the bat and the ball, the umpire declared him out.
This incident happened in the fourth over of West Indies' innings. Hayley Mathews tried to play a cut shot on a ball from England bowler Lynsey Smith, but the ball went straight to wicketkeeper Amy Jones. After which Amy Jones made a strong appeal for catch. But on-field umpire N Janani declared it not-out, after which England captain Charlie Dean took review (DRS).

In the initial video replay, the ball was seen passing near the bat, but no clear deflection was seen. After this, when TV umpire Nimali Perera switched to 'Ultra-Edge' technology, a sharp spike was seen which indicated contact with the bat. But the most surprising thing was that in the video replay of the same frame in which that spike was visible, a clear gap was visible between the bat and the ball. Umpire Perera also accepted that gap and checked again. But in the end he instructed the on-field umpire to change his decision and give him out. Which surprised everyone.
Haley Mathews appeared quite unhappy and surprised by this decision. She was seen arguing with on-field umpires Janani and Eloise Sheridan before leaving the field. Even after coming out of the field, his anger did not subside and he sat in the dugout with head coach Shane Dietz and watched the replay of this dismissal again. After this, she was also seen having a long discussion on this matter with reserve umpire Karin Klaste near the boundary line.
