Alphonso Davies is poised to make his comeback from injury in Canada’s vital FIFA World Cup 2026 group stage clash with Switzerland.

The 25-year-old has been sidelined since sustaining a hamstring injury during the second leg of Bayern Munich’s UEFA Champions League semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain on May 6.

As a result, Canada’s captain has been forced to miss the co-hosts’ first two World Cup fixtures, watching from the sidelines.

Jesse Marsch’s side, however, have coped admirably in his absence. They earned their first-ever World Cup point in a 1-1 draw with Bosnia and Herzegovina in Toronto, followed by a historic first victory at the tournament — a commanding 6-0 triumph over Qatar in Vancouver.

Those results have placed Canada at the top of Group B heading into their decisive match against Switzerland in Vancouver at 8pm BST tonight. A draw or victory will be enough for the team to secure the top spot in the group.

To guarantee playing both their last-32 and, if they qualify, their last-16 matches in Vancouver, Marsch’s men must finish as group winners; otherwise, they will have to contest their knockout stage fixtures in the United States.

Davies’ experience in high-pressure matches could prove vital against Switzerland. Manager Jesse Marsch has indicated that his captain is likely to feature, although possibly starting from the bench.

“We’ll assess what we need from him in the game,” the former Leeds United manager told CBC. “I definitely want to get him involved in the match.”

He continued, “I think he can make a big impact — not only in terms of his physical and footballing abilities but also mentally and psychologically. Having our captain and best player back is a huge boost for the team.”

Marsch added, “It’s not just about what Alphonso contributes on the pitch; it’s also about what he represents to us as a team. The positive news is that he’s looking very sharp in training — fit, ready, and excited. So, we’ll see how things go, but I expect him to play.”

Davies, who is known for his versatility across several positions, has earned 58 caps for Canada but has not played for his national side since October 2024 due to recurring injuries.

The Bayern Munich star made only 23 appearances for his club last season and did not feature until December 9. He started in all three of Canada’s matches at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where he scored in a 4-1 defeat against Croatia. Now, he will aim to help his nation qualify for the knockout stages for the first time in their history.
