What Scotland Need from Other World Cup Groups to Secure a Knockout Spot

Scotland have wrapped up their Group C campaign in third place with a goal difference of minus three. But the question remains — will that be enough to progress?

After their 3-0 loss to Brazil, the Scottish side faces an anxious few days ahead as they wait to learn their fate.

In this tournament format, the eight highest-ranked third-placed teams from the twelve groups advance to the round of 32, while the remaining four are eliminated.

This means Scotland must now wait nervously to see if their tally of three points, coupled with a goal difference of -3, will be enough to outperform at least four other third-placed teams — or if they are set for another early exit from a major competition.

Manager Steve Clarke will be keeping a close watch on the results as they unfold.

Breaking down every possible permutation across all groups would be an exhausting task for anyone.

Instead, here’s an overview of the minimum and maximum points each group’s third-placed team could finish on — and unfortunately for Scotland, some of the maximum outcomes do not make for pleasant reading.

Minimum: 1 point – if Mexico defeat Czech Republic and South Korea overcome South Africa. A draw in either or both fixtures would see the third-placed team finish with two points.

Maximum: 4 points – if Czech Republic beat Mexico.

Completed: Scotland (3 points)

Completed: Bosnia and Herzegovina (4 points)

Minimum: 3 points – if Paraguay and Australia avoid drawing with one another.

Maximum: 4 points – if Paraguay and Australia share the spoils.

Minimum: 1 point – if Ivory Coast defeat Curacao and Germany beat Ecuador. A draw in any of those games would leave the third-placed team with two points.

Maximum: 4 points – if Ecuador beat Germany.

Minimum: 3 points – if Japan defeat Sweden.

Maximum: 4 points – if Sweden manage at least a draw against Japan.

Minimum: 2 points – if New Zealand overcome Belgium and/or Egypt defeat Iran.

Maximum: 4 points – if Iran beat Egypt and Belgium get the better of New Zealand.

Minimum: 2 points – if Uruguay lose to Spain.

Maximum: 4 points – if Uruguay beat Spain and Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia avoid drawing with one another.

Minimum: 1 point – if Senegal and Iraq draw their match.

Maximum: 3 points – if there is a winner between Senegal and Iraq.

Minimum: 3 points – if Austria and Algeria do not draw with each other.

Maximum: 4 points – if Austria and Algeria draw their match.

Minimum: 2 points – if DR Congo and Uzbekistan share the points.

Maximum: 4 points – if DR Congo defeat Uzbekistan.

Minimum: 3 points – if Croatia lose to Ghana.

Maximum: 4 points – if Croatia avoid defeat against Ghana.

Scotland fans will be hoping the results in the coming days fall in their favour to keep their World Cup journey alive.
