Saudi government’s preparations regarding Ebola virus

On May 17, 2026, the World Health Organization (WHO) described the Ebola outbreak in DRC and Uganda as a matter of international concern. After this, Saudi Arabia’s Public Health Authority (Weqaya) has further intensified its preparations.

The Saudi government has increased health screening and surveillance for travelers coming from Uganda, South Sudan and their neighboring countries such as Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania and Congo-Brazzaville. Rapid response teams have been deployed at all entry points so that any threat can be stopped immediately.

Impact on visas and travel

  • DRC: Entry visa for travelers coming from the affected areas here has been closed since July 2019 and this restriction still continues.
  • Other countries: Health screening and monitoring rules have been made more stringent for countries like Uganda and South Sudan.

Weqaya has told that Saudi Arabia’s surveillance system is completely ready. As of June 22, 2026, no confirmed or suspected cases of Ebola have been reported in Saudi Arabia. Also, daily health check-ups are being conducted at the places of stay of pilgrims coming from neighboring countries and all health centers are fully prepared to handle suspected cases.
