Brazilian football icon Neymar has reportedly decided to step back from negotiations with FC Cincinnati following frustration over the sluggish pace of discussions regarding a possible transfer, as per a report by The Athletic. Despite months of engagement, the Major League Soccer outfit is said to have never presented an official offer to the 34-year-old forward. Neymar made his much-anticipated first appearance of the World Cup on Wednesday.

Unproductive discussions

The Athletic revealed that FC Cincinnati’s Sporting Director Chris Albright and President Jeff Berding travelled to Brazil in April to meet Neymar and his father. The report indicates that Neymar was open to the idea of a move to Ohio provided the financial package was suitable, but no firm proposal materialised from the club.

Open to MLS opportunities

Although the talks with FC Cincinnati have ended, Neymar reportedly remains interested in a potential move to Major League Soccer if the right offer comes along. His current contract with Santos expires at the end of the year, and he has registered six goals and four assists in 15 appearances for the Brazilian side this season.

Over his international career, Neymar has scored 79 goals in 129 appearances for Brazil. At club level, he has netted 216 league goals while representing some of the world’s most prestigious teams, including Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG).

Back in action

Neymar recently returned to international duty with Brazil after a lengthy absence, featuring in a 3-0 victory over Scotland on Wednesday night — his first appearance for the national side in 2024 or 2025.

What’s next?

Brazil now await their Round of 32 opponent, a match scheduled to take place in Houston on Monday. Meanwhile, FC Cincinnati will resume their Major League Soccer campaign after the World Cup break on July 22.
