Situated in the Sahyadri mountain range of Maharashtra, this fort is a living proof of India’s historical glory. 3,389 feet above sea level, this fort is also known as Iron Fort. The fort is always popular among tourists due to its ancient history and magnificent architecture.

It has witnessed many regimes

The history of Lohgad fort is very old and connected with many dynasties. The fort was first built by the Lohatmiya dynasty in the 10th century. Later on, this fort was ruled by the Chalukya, Rashtrakuta, Yadav, Bahmani, Nizam, Mughal and Maratha empires.

Period of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj – In 1648, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj recognized the importance of the fort and captured the fort with his intelligence. However, they had to hand over the fort to the Mughals as per the Treaty of Purandar in 1665. But in 1670, Shivaji Maharaj once again captured this fort from the Mughals. This fort was then used to store the treasure brought from the Surat expedition.

Period of Peshwas – Later during the Peshwa period, popular leader Nana Fadnavis took shelter here. He built a large water tank and a footwell in the fort during that time which is still present in the fort.

The architecture is amazing

The construction and military structure of Lohgad fort is very incomparable. The fort has a total of four entrances which include Ganesh Darwaza, Narayan Darwaza, Hanuman Darwaza and Maha Darwaza. All these four gates are still present in the fort and have beautiful carvings on them. The fort has a place called Vinchu Kada from where one can enter the main parts of the fort. This place really looks like a scorpion sting. From here one can see a beautiful and captivating view of the Sahyadri mountain range.

How to reach Lohgarh?

  • If you want to visit Lohgad, first you have to come to Pune from Mumbai.
  • If traveling by rail, take any express train from Mumbai to Lonavala and alight at Malvali station. From Malvali you can trek to Lohgarh or take a rickshaw or taxi to reach the base village.
  • If going by road, use the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. From here you can go to base village Malvli via Lonavala.
  • If going by plane, take a flight from Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport to Pune International Airport. You can take a taxi from here.
