Manchester United are reportedly preparing to compete with Europe’s biggest clubs for the signature of Mexican prodigy Gilberto Mora, according to a new report.

At just 17 years old, Mora became the youngest player ever to represent Mexico at the World Cup, making his debut in the opening match against South Africa in the nation’s capital.

El Tricolor secured a 2-0 win, with the young attacking midfielder entering the field in the 66th minute of a dramatic encounter that saw three red cards, leaving South Africa with only nine players.

Mexico followed that result with consecutive victories over South Korea and the Czech Republic, comfortably advancing to the knockout stage. Mora started for the first time in the World Cup during the clash with the Czechs, becoming the sixth youngest debutant in the tournament’s history.

The current record is held by Manchester United legend Norman Whiteside, who made his debut for Northern Ireland at 17 years and 42 days old against Yugoslavia during the 1982 World Cup in Spain.

Despite his youth, Mora has already established himself as a first-team regular for Club Tijuana in Liga MX, who finished ninth last season. Having made his professional debut at the age of 15, he has since scored 10 goals and provided two assists in 53 appearances for Los Xolos, becoming the youngest goal-scorer in the history of Mexico’s top division.

However, what truly sets the Tuxtla Gutiérrez-born talent apart is his composure on the ball, with an exceptional first touch and dazzling dribbling skills. ESPN’s analysis highlights his constant awareness of the pitch, ability to deliver incisive through balls, and mature decision-making in possession — qualities well beyond his years.

Unsurprisingly, Mora’s record-breaking rise has attracted the attention of several major European clubs, including Manchester United, who have sent scouts to Mexico this month to monitor his performances.

According to TEAMtalk, United were “among a host of European giants represented at the Azteca Stadium” to assess Mora, with Chelsea and Manchester City officials also present. Arsenal and Liverpool are also believed to be closely monitoring the player.

“The 17-year-old attacking midfielder delivered an exceptional performance as Mexico completed a flawless group-stage campaign with a commanding 3-0 win over the Czech Republic.

“Mora started in the Mexican capital and dictated the tempo from the very beginning, displaying the calmness, intelligence, and creativity that have made him one of the most sought-after young talents in world football.

“The Club Tijuana star’s display earned him a standing ovation from the home supporters when he was substituted late in the game, having helped Mexico secure three straight victories and maximum group points.”

Real Madrid are considered the favourites to land the teenager, although Atletico Madrid and FC Barcelona have both reportedly “made it clear they see Mora as a future superstar.”

Elsewhere in Europe, Mora’s list of suitors is equally impressive, with Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, and RB Leipzig all said to be interested.

However, Manchester United are believed to be the “most aggressive of the Premier League clubs” in their pursuit, with Old Trafford officials maintaining “regular contact” with Mora’s representatives to “position themselves strongly for any future move.”

Since INEOS assumed control of Manchester United in 2024, the club’s leadership has placed renewed emphasis on identifying and signing elite young talent from around the world. The acquisitions of Chido Obi and Ayden Heaven from Arsenal have been complemented by moves for Paraguay’s Diego Leon and Mali prospect Sekou Kone.

Yet Mora appears to stand above nearly all players in his age group, as reflected by the calibre of clubs vying for his signature. Should United manage to secure the signing of football’s next global star, it could rank among INEOS’s most astute transfer moves to date.
