In a major step toward reducing electricity consumption and promoting sustainable governance, the Gujarat government has launched a statewide energy conservation campaign for all government and semi-government offices. The initiative comes in response to rising power demand, growing concerns over global warming, and the need for more efficient use of energy resources.

Launched under the slogan "Bijli Ki Bachat Hi Bijli Ka Utpadan Hai" (Saving Electricity is Equal to Generating Electricity), the campaign aims to make public offices more energy-efficient while setting an example for environmentally responsible administration.

AC Temperature Fixed at 24°C

As part of the new guidelines, all government departments, boards, corporations, and public offices must maintain air conditioners at a default temperature of 24 degrees Celsius.

The government has also directed offices to adopt smart energy-saving technologies. Occupancy sensors and timer-based automation systems will be installed in common areas such as corridors, meeting rooms, parking spaces, and restrooms to ensure lights and air-conditioning systems are switched off automatically when these areas are not in use.

LED Lighting and 5-Star Appliances to Become Standard

The state government has instructed departments to gradually replace conventional, power-intensive lighting with energy-efficient LED lights across government buildings.

In addition, all future government purchases of electrical and electronic equipment will prioritize energy efficiency. Only 5-star energy-rated appliances will be procured to reduce electricity consumption and improve long-term operational efficiency.

Departments Asked to Submit Energy Efficiency Plans

The government has also assigned greater responsibility to employees and officials for conserving electricity in workplaces.

Under the guidelines, lights, fans, computers, air conditioners, and other electrical equipment must be switched off after office hours and during public holidays unless required for essential operations.

Every government department has been directed to prepare and submit an 'Office Energy Efficiency Action Plan' within the next 45 days. The implementation of these plans will be reviewed annually through independent third-party energy audits to ensure compliance.

Focus on Solar Energy and Recognition for Best Performers

To further strengthen its clean energy initiatives, the Gujarat government will accelerate the installation of solar panels on government buildings. Existing solar power systems will also be reviewed to assess their efficiency and performance.

To encourage participation, the government has announced that offices demonstrating exceptional performance in energy conservation will receive special recognition and awards.

Officials believe the initiative will not only help reduce electricity consumption and operating costs but also contribute significantly to Gujarat's long-term energy security and sustainable development goals.
