England are facing an anxious wait over the fitness of Reece James after the right-back missed training on Thursday.
Thomas Tuchel’s side are set to play Panama in their final Group L encounter, where they must secure a win while also maintaining their goal difference advantage to finish at the top of the group.
The Three Lions are also monitoring Declan Rice, who is dealing with a calf problem, while Chelsea skipper James picked up a hamstring injury during the goalless draw against Ghana.
James was absent from Thursday’s training session and is now a major doubt for the fixture at MetLife Stadium on Saturday night. The 26-year-old has started both of England’s opening two matches in the group stage.
Ezri Konsa may be shifted to right-back in James’ absence, with John Stones likely to return to the starting line-up at centre-back.
Alternatively, Djed Spence could fill in at right-back, while Nico O’Reilly might be recalled at left-back. Jarell Quansah is another potential option for England on the right side of defence.
In midfield, Kobbie Mainoo is expected to step in for Rice. Although Rice’s injury is not believed to be serious, the Arsenal midfielder is also one booking away from suspension for the Round of 32, which could influence Tuchel’s decision to rest him.
Other matches scheduled include Portland Timbers 2 taking on San Jose Earthquakes II, Atlanta United 2 facing Crown Legacy FC, Chattanooga FC against Chicago Fire FC II, Colorado Rapids 2 meeting Vancouver Whitecaps FC II, Ventura County FC playing Real Monarchs, Toronto FC II hosting New England Revolution II, and Carolina Core FC clashing with Huntsville City FC.
