Prabhjit Singh, who was the head of Uber in India, is now going to start a new journey. ChatGPT maker OpenAI has announced that Prabhjit Singh will work as the managing director of the company in India from September 2026. He will report to Kiran Mani, Managing Director, Asia Pacific, OpenAI. With this appointment, Prabhjeet will be the most senior executive of OpenAI in India.
OpenAI said in its statement that Prabhjit Singh's responsibility will be to expand the company's business in India, bring AI to new consumers, promote the adoption of AI in the enterprise sector, partner with government and private institutions and create better coordination with regulatory bodies.
The company says that their focus will be on strengthening India's AI ecosystem and taking the benefits of Artificial Intelligence to more and more people, businesses, institutions and government agencies.
Prabhjit Singh has studied from IIT Kanpur and IIM Ahmedabad. He joined Uber in August 2015 as General Manager and Head of Strategy. After this he took over the business of India and South Asia and became the President of the company in June 2020. Before Uber, he was an associate partner at McKinsey & Company.
During his tenure of nearly a decade, he played an important role in the expansion of Uber in India. Under his leadership, the company strengthened its presence in Tier-2 and smaller cities. Also, services like Uber Moto, Uber Auto, Intercity Travel etc. expanded rapidly.
Uber confirmed the resignation of Prabhjit Singh and said that India is one of the most important markets in the world for the company. Praising his leadership and contribution, the company said that he has played a big role in building a strong team and the foundation of the business.
However, the company has not yet announced the name of his successor. It is expected that new leadership will be announced in the next few weeks.
Prabhjit Singh is leaving Uber at a time when competition is increasing in the ride-hailing market in India. Uber is trying to strengthen its market share amid the challenge of domestic platforms like Rapido and new players like Bharat Taxi.
Meanwhile, the company has also started new facilities like metro ticket booking in its app. This service is currently available in five cities and so far more than one crore metro tickets have been booked through ONDC through Uber app. Recently, Uber had also announced a strategic investment of Rs 60 crore in ONDC. Now Prabhjit Singh's joining OpenAI is being considered a big step for India's AI sector.
