Marc Guehi has made it clear that he was not upset about missing out on a starting spot in England’s opening World Cup match, adding that he is content to contribute in any capacity required by the team.

The centre-back’s absence from Thomas Tuchel’s starting eleven in England’s 4-2 victory over Croatia came as a surprise to many. However, Guehi was back in the lineup for the goalless draw against Boston.

Speaking about being benched, Guehi explained, “No, it wasn’t difficult. Honestly, it doesn’t really matter who starts as long as the team performs well.”

He continued, “We’re all here for the same objective, and everyone knows what that is. What matters most is that the team succeeds.”

“I was happy to get the chance in the last match to help my teammates, and I’ll gladly take on any role I’m given,” Guehi added.

This summer’s tournament marks the 25-year-old defender’s first appearance at a World Cup. Reflecting on his journey, Guehi admitted, “I wouldn’t call it a dream come true because I never actually imagined being in this position.”

“It’s a huge responsibility, but for those who dream of this, I want them to know that it’s absolutely possible,” he said.

England will be without defender Reece James for their final group-stage encounter against Panama — a must-win match if they are to advance to the knockout phase.

Discussing the upcoming fixture, Guehi remarked, “It doesn’t matter whether Panama are still in contention or not. Their goal will always be the same — to perform well and make their country proud.”

“For us, the focus is on improving from the last game. It’s going to be tough, as it will be a similar challenge,” he observed.

“But if we can build on our previous performance, it will definitely be a big positive for us,” Guehi concluded.
