Ukrainian football powerhouse Shakhtar Donetsk may stage their home fixtures for the upcoming UEFA Champions League season in England, following the start of discussions with a Premier League club. With the ongoing turmoil in Ukraine preventing them from hosting matches domestically, the club is exploring alternative European venues, and London has emerged as a leading candidate.
London stadium identified as potential host
According to reports from The Standard, Shakhtar are considering Brentford’s Gtech Community Stadium as a possible venue for their Champions League games. Owing to UEFA’s safety restrictions linked to the continuing conflict in Ukraine, the team must find a neutral ground abroad, having previously played in Poland last season. The 17,000-capacity stadium in West London has now become a strong option, with negotiations actively under way between the two clubs.
Club confirms discussions are ongoing
Shakhtar’s management is exploring several possibilities across Western Europe as they work to finalise next season’s schedule. Responding to speculation about a potential move to the United Kingdom, club officials have acknowledged that talks are being held with multiple stadiums.
A club spokesperson explained: “Shakhtar is currently negotiating with several venues in the United Kingdom and Germany to secure a host stadium for its UEFA Champions League matches next season. We will not comment further until an official decision is made in the near future.”
Strong ties with the local community
A temporary switch to West London would carry cultural significance, particularly given the sizeable Ukrainian population in nearby Hounslow and Ealing. Brentford have been active in supporting displaced Ukrainian families through various community initiatives, while also making strategic use of their modern stadium to boost income from external sporting events. This potential partnership appears mutually beneficial, allowing the Premier League club to maximise its facilities while providing Shakhtar with a welcoming environment.
Champions League phase begins in September
Shakhtar will skip July’s qualifying rounds and proceed directly to the Champions League league phase starting in September, compelling the club’s executives to finalise logistical arrangements promptly. Meanwhile, Brentford will need to carefully coordinate any possible ground-sharing arrangement with their own domestic fixtures as the new Premier League season approaches.
