New Delhi: Delhi Metro is set to become smarter and more technology-driven, with Artificial Intelligence (AI), advanced digital systems, and driverless train operations playing a bigger role in its future. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is also focusing on enhancing passenger experience, improving operational efficiency, and expanding its world-class transit network.

These insights were shared by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) Managing Director Dr. Vikas Kumar during an exclusive interview on the popular podcast The Candid Talkhosted by veteran journalist and Tezzbuzz News Editor-in-Chief Manoj Tibrewal Aakash.

Dr. Kumar discussed DMRC’s vision for the next five years, highlighting the increasing use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), digitisation, CCTV analytics, and data-driven technologies to improve operational efficiency, reliability, and punctuality. He also spoke about plans to enhance passenger convenience, generate additional revenue, create more career opportunities, and further modernize the metro network.

Work Culture Is the Biggest Strength

Explaining the secret behind DMRC’s success, Dr. Kumar credited the organization’s unique work culture established by Dr. E.Sreedharan. He said employees are trusted with responsibilities and given the freedom to make decisions without unnecessary interference, fostering accountability and efficiency.

Leading DMRC Through the COVID-19 Challenge

Dr. Kumar recalled that he took over as Managing Director while the world was recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic. Restoring public confidence in metro travel was the biggest challenge. DMRC introduced strict safety protocols, which were widely appreciated and helped reassure millions of commuters.

AI to Make Delhi Metro More Efficient

DMRC has already begun using AI and advanced analytics to optimize operations. According to Dr. Kumar, greater digitization and improved data analysis will allow the organization to deliver even better services to passengers while maintaining high standards of safety and punctuality.

Passenger Feedback Drives Improvements

Dr. Kumar said DMRC conducts Customer Satisfaction Surveys at least twice every year to understand passenger concerns, identify service gaps, and implement improvements based on data-driven insights.

Driverless Metro Was the Toughest Decision

One of the most challenging decisions for DMRC was introducing Driverless Metro (Unmanned Train Operation). Initially, there were concerns about the reliability of the technology, but after extensive testing and robust safety protocols, the system proved successful. Today, driverless trains operate on over 100 kilometers of the Delhi Metro network.

Managing 6.5 Million Daily Passengers

DMRC currently operates a network of approximately 416 kilometres, including the metro systems in Gurugram and Noida. Around 6.5 million passengers travel daily on the network, with ridership reaching 8 million on peak days, making reliability and punctuality critical priorities.

Round-the-Clock Reliability

Dr. Kumar emphasized that maintaining a world-class metro system requires continuous planning, preventive maintenance, backup systems, employee training, skill development, and strict adherence to safety standards to ensure uninterrupted service.
