Jesse Marsch shared his thoughts following Canada’s landmark achievement, as the team claimed their first-ever progression to the knockout stage of the World Cup.

Stephen Eustáquio was not only the match-winner but also a commanding presence throughout the afternoon for Canada. The LAFC midfielder, formerly of FC Porto, delivered a standout performance to guide his side to glory.

Canada have done it! They have reached the Round of 16 for the very first time in their footballing history.

GOAL!! SOUTH AFRICA 0-1 CANADA

Canada broke the deadlock right at the start of stoppage time, thanks to a sensational long-range strike from Eustáquio that beat Ronwen Williams into the far corner. The goal sparked wild celebrations as the North Americans edged closer to history.

Five minutes of added time were signalled, with extra time looming if South Africa managed to equalise. However, Canada were out of substitutions and had to hold on.

Oswin Appollis tested Maxime Crépeau from distance, but the MLS-based goalkeeper made a comfortable save to keep it level.

Canada continued to grow in confidence, as Jonathan David forced Williams into another solid stop from close range.

Promise David came close just after Alphonso Davies entered the field. The Bayern Munich star was immediately involved in the build-up, nearly providing an instant impact for his side.

South Africa stood firm, producing desperate defending to keep Canada at bay. Williams made a crucial save to stop Tani Oluwaseyi, and Mbekezeli Mbokazi followed up with a vital clearance to deny Jonathan David a simple tap-in.

Derek Cornelius squandered a golden opportunity from six yards out, heading straight at Williams after being left unmarked from Eustáquio’s free-kick delivery. Moments later, Eustáquio himself saw a long-range effort sail harmlessly over Williams’s goal.
