Harmanpreet Kaur To Continue As India Captain? Head Coach Gives Update After Women's T20 World Cup Exit
Harmanpreet Kaur led India at the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026, but the campaign ended in disappointment as the team finished third in Group A, missing out on the semifinals of the 12-nation tournament in England.
India started strongly with convincing wins over Pakistan and the Netherlands, before stumbling against South Africa in their third group fixture. They bounced back to beat Bangladesh at Old Trafford, keeping their knockout hopes alive heading into the final group match. But at Lord's on Sunday, despite posting a competitive 170, India fell short as Australia chased it down with six wickets to spare, ending their tournament journey.
In the post-match press conference, head coach Amol Muzumdar faced a direct question: would Harmanpreet continue as captain? "It's up to the selectors to decide," he said. "But my short and sweet answer would be yes."
Muzumdar also highlighted areas that need urgent attention. "If I have to pinpoint the key areas from the entire tournament, we really need to work on our bowling and fielding. We also need to be more aggressive with the bat, maybe an extra 15–20 runs could have made a difference."
He defended the young bowling attack, however, pointing to their inexperience. "I've said this before, give us 18 months, and this bowling attack will be a very different one," Muzumdar added, offering a note of optimism despite the early exit.
