Canada kicked off the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a narrow 1–0 victory over South Africa at Los Angeles, advancing to the round of 16 in a match that carried multiple historic firsts.
The decisive goal came deep into stoppage time at the end of the second half, with Stephen Eustáquio finding the net in the second minute of added time to seal the win for the tournament co-hosts.
Canadian defender Alphonso Davies, who plays for German giants Bayern Munich, made his first appearance of the tournament after recovering from injury. The 24-year-old was brought on as a substitute in the 75th minute and was handed the captain's armband for his return.
Both teams were making their maiden appearances in the World Cup knockout rounds, having qualified from their groups for the first time ever.
South Africa manager Hugo Broos, at 74 years, 2 months, and 17 days old, became the oldest head coach to take charge of a knockout-stage match in World Cup history.
The fixture also marked a tournament first: a host nation playing a World Cup match on foreign soil, as the competition is being staged across three countries.
Canada will now face the winner of the Netherlands–Morocco tie in the round of 16 on July 4 in Houston.
This year's World Cup is the first to feature 48 national teams and is being co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The final is set for July 19.
