The court has given a historic verdict in the case of rape and murder of a three-year-old innocent girl in Pune district of Maharashtra. The District and Sessions Court, while sentencing 65-year-old convict Bhimrao Kamble to death, placed this case in the category of "rarest of rare" i.e. the most heinous crimes. The court said that this crime is shocking not only to the judiciary but to the conscience of the entire society and there is no scope for any leniency in such a case.
The incident took place on May 1 in Nasarapur village in Pune district. According to the investigation, the accused took the three-year-old girl with him by luring her with snacks and showing her a newborn calf. After this, he took her to a shed near a cattle shed, where he raped her and later killed her by strangulating her mouth and causing serious injuries. After the girl went missing, the family started a search. Later his body was recovered. In the CCTV footage of the area, the accused was seen taking the girl with him, on the basis of which the police arrested him.
During the hearing, the prosecution cited several important decisions of the Supreme Court and said that this case falls in the category of "rarest of rare". The court agreed with this argument and said that the kind of cruelty meted out to the innocent girl was extremely inhuman and brutal. The judge also noted that the accused had been involved in sexual offenses before and showed no remorse despite being aware of the consequences of the law.
Pune Rural Police formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the matter. The police collected important evidence in about 15 days and filed a 1,200-page charge sheet in the court. 55 witnesses testified in the court in the case, strengthening the prosecution's case.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis welcomed the court's decision, saying there was no place for such criminals in society. He praised the prompt action of the investigating agencies, police and prosecution and said that the completion of investigation and trial in record time shows the effectiveness of the justice system. This decision is being considered an important example of a strict judicial stance on heinous crimes against children.
