Mason Greenwood has reportedly made a direct plea to Olympique de Marseille to let him leave, as competition for his signature heats up between major European clubs. Although the English forward has long been linked with a move to Serie A side AS Roma, a highly lucrative offer from Turkish powerhouse Fenerbahce has emerged, potentially threatening Roma’s bid to sign him.
The ongoing transfer saga surrounding Greenwood’s future has taken a sharp turn after he expressed his desire to move on. Following a prolific season in France, where he scored 26 goals, the 24-year-old has clearly communicated to the Marseille management: “Let me go.” This represents a crucial point of tension with the Ligue 1 club, who signed him on 18 July 2024 on a five-year deal worth up to €31.6 million. Despite Greenwood’s request, Marseille are under no pressure to reduce their asking price.
Marseille have set a firm valuation of €55 million for Greenwood, a figure influenced by their financial planning and a significant sell-on clause. Manchester United are entitled to 40% of any future transfer fee, which has prompted the French side to maintain a strong negotiating stance. Although several European teams have shown interest, Marseille remain unwilling to accept any cut-price offers for their top performer.
According to reports from Corriere dello Sport, Fenerbahce have entered the race with a record-breaking offer. The Istanbul-based club is reportedly prepared to pay Greenwood a net annual salary between €7 million and €8 million. This extraordinary package far surpasses the proposals from other interested clubs, placing the Turkish side in pole position to secure his services.
Fenerbahce’s remarkable financial offer has significantly altered the dynamics of the transfer. It presents a real test for Greenwood, who enjoyed an excellent period at Marseille, finishing as joint-top scorer in Ligue 1 alongside Ousmane Dembele with 21 goals in his debut season, before recording 16 in the 2025–26 campaign.
Meanwhile, Roma had reached a verbal understanding with Greenwood, offering him a net salary of €4.5 million per year, with performance-based bonuses and incremental increases tied to long-term goals. Beyond the financial aspects, the Giallorossi assured Greenwood of a central role in their attacking system under their Serie A project.
The forward was reportedly attracted by Roma’s stature and the tactical vision presented to him, particularly after their third-place finish last season that secured qualification for the upcoming UEFA Champions League. However, Roma are currently facing financial restrictions that have delayed their ability to formalise an official bid. The club has asked for patience, but this delay has provided an opening for rivals like Fenerbahce to make their move.
Pressure is now building on Roma’s management to act swiftly or risk losing out. Although Greenwood still views Roma as his preferred destination, he is unwilling to wait indefinitely. It is understood that he has set an informal deadline of July 5 to decide his future. If Roma fail to meet that timeline, the Englishman may turn his attention to other opportunities — including the massive offer on the table from Turkey.
