Brazil claimed a 2-1 victory over Japan on Monday (29 June 2026), securing their place in the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Following the referee’s final whistle, after an extraordinary 11 minutes of added time, scenes of jubilation erupted among the Brazilian players and fans alike.

Television cameras captured a striking moment when forward Matheus Cunha pointed to the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) crest on his jersey and raised an open hand toward the stands.

The gesture was later revealed to be a response to a comment made by Japanese player Kento Shiogai, who had previously remarked that “Brazil was no longer a football powerhouse.”

Speaking in the mixed zone at the stadium after the match, Cunha explained the meaning behind his reaction towards his Japanese counterpart.

“With all due respect, a Japanese player saying that about such a successful Brazilian national team — come on. If it’s a Brazilian saying it about our own team, we might accept it, but when it comes from outsiders, we stand united against anyone. It’s about what this shirt stands for, who has worn it in the past, and everything we have gone through to wear it,” he said.

The forward’s words reflected both pride and solidarity within the Brazilian camp as the five-time world champions continue their pursuit of another title in North America.
