Viktor Gyokeres has addressed the growing speculation about his future at Arsenal, with reports suggesting that the Premier League champions could include him in a deal to bring Atletico Madrid’s Julian Alvarez to north London.

The Swedish striker enjoyed a successful debut campaign after joining from Sporting CP, helping Arsenal secure the league title. However, his role in Mikel Arteta’s squad is reportedly under review as the manager explores ways to enhance his attacking options ahead of the new season.

Gyokeres responds to transfer rumours

Speaking about his situation, Gyokeres admitted he is aware of the ongoing rumours but remains content at the Emirates Stadium. Despite his strong reputation upon arrival, the 26-year-old often found himself behind Kai Havertz in the pecking order during the title-winning season, leading to talk of a possible summer departure.

Addressing the matter before Sweden’s World Cup round-of-32 match against France, Gyokeres said he is fully committed to Arsenal: “Of course it’s flattering to see that clubs are interested but I feel extremely comfortable at Arsenal. After the season we have had, I only have positive feelings.”

Reports of potential Alvarez swap deal

Arsenal’s reported interest in Julian Alvarez has intensified the uncertainty surrounding Gyokeres. Several reports claim the Gunners are considering a move that could see the Argentine return to the Premier League, with Gyokeres potentially moving the other way to Atletico Madrid in a high-profile exchange.

Arteta is believed to be keen on adding more tactical flexibility to his front line. Gyokeres scored 21 goals across all competitions last season but occasionally struggled to replicate his prolific form from his time in Portugal in the physically demanding Premier League. Bringing in Alvarez would mark a notable change in Arsenal’s attacking setup as they aim to defend their league title.

Focus shifts to World Cup duties

For now, Gyokeres is concentrating on international duty as Graham Potter’s Sweden gear up for a crucial World Cup knockout clash against France. The Scandinavian side advanced to the round of 32 after a mixed group stage that included a win over Tunisia and a draw with Japan, setting up a showdown with the reigning world champions.

The fixture will see Gyokeres go up against his Arsenal teammate William Saliba. Reflecting on the challenge, Gyokeres commented: “Yeah I’m looking forward to seeing him and to playing against him, it’s going to be fun. We have to be at our best, we have to do our defensive organisation almost perfect and then of course take the chances we’re going to get in the game.”

Sweden’s hopes of a shock progression

Despite being seen as underdogs, Gyokeres believes Sweden have what it takes to pull off an upset. Expected to lead the attack, he will need to be in peak form if Potter’s men are to overcome the 2022 finalists and reach the quarter-finals.

Discussing Sweden’s mindset, the Arsenal striker added: “We have our confidence, I think we have to believe in ourselves, we’ve seen in a lot of games this tournament that you can win games and you can do well even though you play against the best teams. So of course, we might be the underdogs but we still believe in ourselves.”
