Morocco advanced to the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating the Netherlands 3-2 in a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw after extra time in their Round of 32 clash.
The match was played at BBVA Stadium in Guadalupe, Mexico, with Brazilian referee Wilton Sampaio officiating.
The Netherlands broke the deadlock in the 72nd minute when forward Cody Gakpo found the back of the net. Just as the Dutch appeared set for victory, Morocco struck in stoppage time. Defender Issa Diop joined the attack and equalized in the first minute of added time (90+1), sending the match into extra time.
Neither side managed to score during the additional 30 minutes, forcing the tie to a penalty shootout. Morocco held their nerve from the spot, winning 3-2 to secure their place in the Round of 16.
