NASCAR to Soften Bumpers to Reduce Contact on Short Tracks

NASCAR has openly acknowledged its ongoing challenges with racing on short tracks. Circuits that once hosted some of the most thrilling and competitive oval racing in the world have struggled to deliver exciting events since the introduction of the Next Gen car to the Cup Series in 2022. To address these issues, the series has experimented with measures such as high-degradation tyres and increased engine power at several shorter circuits. This weekend, NASCAR is implementing yet another change—one specifically aimed at reducing the frequency of bumping incidents.

Beginning with next month’s race at North Wilkesboro and continuing across three other short tracks under one mile in length throughout the remainder of this season, NASCAR has directed teams to remove a portion of the energy-absorbing foam from both the front and rear bumpers. Additionally, the front bumper struts will undergo modifications as part of this rule adjustment.

The objective behind this update is to make the bumpers more deformable, addressing a frequent criticism that the Next Gen car can endure multiple head-on impacts from either direction without creating any aerodynamic disadvantage. Because the previous bumper design virtually eliminated the risk of damage for the car initiating contact, it encouraged aggressive bumper-to-bumper collisions rather than traditional overtaking manoeuvres. The new regulation is intended to discourage such tactics. Moreover, it should help alleviate driver discomfort caused by repeated impacts during short-track racing, where physical contact often occurs lap after lap.

Although this rule applies exclusively to the shortest tracks on the NASCAR calendar, it will not affect road courses or ovals measuring one mile or longer. Consequently, drivers will still be able to utilise fully energy-absorbing bumpers at high-speed, contact-prone venues such as Darlington, Phoenix, New Hampshire, and this weekend’s road course event at Sonoma Raceway.
