AS Monaco have completed the permanent signing of Spanish forward Ansu Fati from Barcelona after triggering the €11 million (£9m/$13m) purchase clause. The Ligue 1 club acted following the 23-year-old's successful loan campaign, with Fati signing a four-year agreement that keeps him in the Principality until June 2030. Once the heir to Lionel Messi’s iconic No.10 shirt at Camp Nou, Fati now begins a new chapter in his career in France.

The move has been confirmed by both Barcelona and Monaco. After a productive season-long loan, Monaco exercised the €11m option to finalise the transfer, securing Fati’s services until 2030. Barcelona, in their official announcement, revealed that they have retained a percentage of any future transfer fee.

During his loan stint last season, Fati rediscovered his sharpness and confidence, making 30 appearances and scoring 12 goals for Monaco. This impressive tally meant he averaged a goal every 110 minutes — the best strike rate in Ligue 1. His performances earned him three man-of-the-match awards, underlining his growing importance to the Monaco squad.

Fati leaves Barcelona after making 123 senior appearances and netting 29 goals. Once hailed as one of La Masia’s brightest prospects, he burst onto the scene during the 2019-20 season, setting multiple records. At just 16 years and 304 days old, he became Barcelona’s youngest-ever league scorer in a 2-2 draw against Osasuna. He later broke another record, becoming the youngest player to score in the UEFA Champions League at 17 years and 40 days against Inter Milan.

Barcelona issued an official statement to bid farewell: “FC Barcelona would like to thank Ansu Fati publicly for his commitment, dedication, and his contribution during his time as a blaugrana, and wishes him all the best for the future both on and off the field.”

In Monaco, Fati has finally found consistency after a difficult spell with Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League. The Spain international adapted quickly to life in Ligue 1, showcasing his technical flair and composure in front of goal. Fati delivered standout performances, including a memorable brace in the derby against Nice and decisive goals against Lens and Metz.

Monaco praised Fati’s return to full fitness and his efficiency on the field, stressing that his technical qualities will continue to benefit the team. The permanent transfer marks a positive new beginning for the forward, free from the weight of expectations that came with being Messi’s successor at Barcelona.

Looking ahead, Fati will now aim to lead Monaco’s attack as they prepare for the upcoming domestic and European competitions. With his future secured, the focus will be on maintaining his fine goalscoring form and pushing for a return to the Spanish national team. Monaco are expected to rely heavily on Fati as they attempt to mount a serious challenge to Paris Saint-Germain for the Ligue 1 title next season.
