Wayne Rooney has made an impassioned appeal to England and Bayern Munich forward Harry Kane, urging him to make a move to Manchester United in a bid to help the club challenge for the Premier League crown.
The Tottenham Hotspur legend has been in sensational form this season, netting an extraordinary 70 goals across all competitions for both club and country.
In recent days, Kane has been linked with a possible departure from Bayern Munich, with reports suggesting that his future is uncertain as he enters the final year of his current contract.
Barcelona are understood to have shown interest in signing Kane, although the striker’s current preference is reportedly to extend his stay at Bayern Munich.
Manchester United have also been intermittently associated with a move for Kane over the past few years, and Rooney has now publicly called on the England captain to join the Red Devils to help restore their dominance in English football.
Speaking on his BBC podcast, Rooney said, “I think everyone would have an interest,” when asked about the growing speculation surrounding Kane’s future.
He continued, “Listen, if Harry Kane’s not going to stay at Bayern Munich, then I’d love him at Manchester United.
“If he’s listening: Harry, you’ve got Alan Shearer’s record there… come and help get Manchester United back!”
Rooney went on to explain, “You think about Harry Kane — he’s already won the Bundesliga, and if he goes to Barcelona, he could win La Liga… but deep down, he’ll want to win the Premier League.”
“Imagine he comes to Manchester United and becomes the driving force to bring the club back to Premier League glory.”
Rooney also discussed why he believes England’s World Cup aspirations will depend heavily on Kane and another key player.
“If we win the tournament, then it will be because of them — more so Harry Kane, from my point of view,” Rooney explained.
“I think Jude is one of those players who naturally inspires his team-mates, perhaps without even realising it, through his hunger and drive.”
“Harry is the one you depend on for goals,” he added.
Rooney concluded, “Jude will have big moments and might win us a match at some point, but it’s Harry’s goals that will define our success. There’ll be a game — maybe a semi-final — that’s tight, and that’s when Jude will step up and take charge.”
