Manchester United are reportedly in a tight contest with several Premier League rivals to secure the signing of Mainz 05’s 25-year-old midfielder, Kaishu Sano, according to recent reports.

Despite Japan’s heartbreaking last-minute exit against Brazil, the team – led by the energetic Sano – delivered an impressive World Cup performance.

Drawn in the challenging Group F alongside the Netherlands, Tunisia, and Sweden, the Blue Samurai fell just short of topping the group after a 1-1 draw with Sweden.

This result set up a daunting Round of 16 clash with Brazil, yet Japan displayed remarkable composure and confidence against the South American giants.

Under Hajime Moriyasu’s leadership, Japan started the match in Houston with their trademark speed and intensity, dominating early exchanges against a Brazilian side featuring Matheus Cunha and Casemiro.

Sano was central to Japan’s superb first-half display, netting his first international goal after intercepting a misplaced pass from Danilo. The midfielder surged past Casemiro – who appeared to be struggling at 34 years of age – and slotted a precise finish into the bottom corner of Alisson’s net. During commentary, Casemiro was described as looking “a shadow of his former self” while chasing Sano.

However, Japan’s joy turned to despair in the second half when Brazil mounted a comeback to win 2-1, with Casemiro scoring a header and Gabriel Martinelli netting the late winner.

Primarily a defensive midfielder at Mainz, Sano is known for his relentless work rate, covering vast areas of the pitch with stamina and determination. He is secure in possession, though his long-range passing remains an area for improvement.

Sano joined the Bundesliga club in 2024 from Japan’s Kashima Antlers and has two years remaining on his contract at the Mewa Arena. According to German publication Bild, Mainz are reportedly valuing him between £43 million and £52 million.

Japanese outlet Nikkan Sports, as cited by BuliNews, reports that Liverpool are currently “showing strongest interest” in completing a transfer.

Nevertheless, Manchester United and Arsenal are also being linked with the player, while Borussia Dortmund are believed to be monitoring the situation closely with an eye on a move within Germany.

Although United are expected to reinforce their midfield this summer, it remains uncertain whether they would commit such a fee for a footballer with only two years of European experience.

Interestingly, United have also been associated with a potential move for Sano’s brother, Kodai, who impressed for Dutch club NEC Nijmegen last season.
