Manchester United forward Ethan Wheatley has made a major stride towards a potential summer loan move to Dutch Eredivisie club SC Cambuur.

United are expected to face a key decision regarding Wheatley’s future over the upcoming months, following a 2025/26 season that saw him spend time on loan with two different clubs.

Wheatley joined Northampton Town from United last summer, where he initially took some time to adjust. Once he settled, he became a crucial player for then-manager Kevin Nolan.

However, United decided to recall Wheatley in January, a move that left Nolan disappointed, and he publicly expressed his frustration. Reports suggest that United viewed Wheatley’s spell at Northampton as successful but believed that a different environment would better support his long-term development.

The Red Devils subsequently sent the young forward to Bradford City for the second half of the campaign.

During his stint at Bradford, Wheatley failed to find the back of the net in 12 appearances and was not included in the squad for the League One play-off semi-final clashes against Bolton.

Earlier in June, a report carried by The Peoples Person indicated that Bundesliga side Schalke, newly promoted for the upcoming season, had shown interest in securing Wheatley’s services. However, United are reportedly unwilling to agree to a permanent transfer and would only consider another loan arrangement.

According to Football Insider journalist Peter O’Rourke, Wheatley has now drawn attention from another top-tier club, SC Cambuur.

O’Rourke mentioned that, “Manchester United forward Ethan Wheatley has held discussions with newly promoted Eredivisie side SC Cambuur over a potential loan move.”

He further added, “Wheatley is eager for a development loan in Europe, and SC Cambuur are keen to convince him to join their ranks.”

If Manchester United deem SC Cambuur a suitable destination for Wheatley’s continued growth, the Eredivisie side’s interest in securing him on loan could be an ideal next step for the player’s career.

Wheatley’s current contract with Manchester United runs until 2028.
