Lamine Yamal has openly accepted the immense responsibility that comes with wearing Barcelona’s iconic number 10 shirt while shining for Spain at the 2026 World Cup. The teenage prodigy has also issued a positive fitness update, confirming he is fully ready to play an entire 90 minutes in the forthcoming knockout matches, despite earlier injury concerns and his limited involvement during the group phase.

Handling the burden of expectation

In a conversation with Tiempo de Juego, Yamal spoke about the heavy expectations placed on him as Spain progressed in the 2026 World Cup. The youngster admitted that it is natural for fans to look toward their most creative attacking players to deliver when it counts the most.

Instead of shying away from the pressure, Yamal has embraced it, seeing himself as a leading figure for both club and country. He stated, “I understand that people are going to focus on the player who excites them the most. Pedri and Rodri are great, but the pressure I have is different — I’m Barcelona’s number 10, the winger. I’m comfortable with that. The real pressure comes when you can’t meet expectations, but I can.”

Yamal confirms full fitness

Aside from discussing expectations, Yamal also shared an important update on his physical condition. The winger arrived at the tournament while still recovering from a minor injury, leading to a cautious approach in the early fixtures.

Now, he insists he is ready to play a full match, though the final decision rests with the coach. “I’m feeling great and very happy. I’ve been training with a lot of energy and excitement for this moment. I’m at 90-80% and improving — it’s not going down. I’m ready to play 90 minutes,” Yamal said. He added, “The coach will decide. I’ll tell him how I’m feeling and whether I can endure it. If there’s a half-chance, I avoid taking unnecessary risks to prevent injury, but I train hard.”

World Cup emotions and focus on results

Spain entered the tournament as one of the favourites, but their performances have attracted mixed reactions. Yamal was frank when assessing the team’s current level, stressing that winning must come before everything else.

“Is our level the same as at the Euros? I’ve played well many times for Barcelona and still gone home, but what matters most is winning,” he commented. Reflecting on his first World Cup goal, the forward expressed deep pride while maintaining his trademark composure. “I have never felt such happiness — the World Cup is special because it’s with your country. I’m not usually emotional; I don’t cry. I cried only when I was injured and saw my mother cry. If I win the World Cup, I still won’t cry — it’s impossible.”

What lies ahead for Spain and Yamal

Spain are set to face Austria in the round of 32, where Yamal hopes to start and complete a full 90 minutes. With the group stage now behind them, the national team must quickly rediscover their attacking rhythm. If Yamal can bring his exceptional Barcelona form to the international stage, Spain could be serious contenders to progress deep into the knockout rounds.
