Brazil's hopes for a successful FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign have taken a hit with the news that midfielder Lucas Paqueta is expected to be out for approximately three weeks due to injury, as reported by ESPN. Paqueta suffered a hamstring injury during Brazil's Round of 32 match against Japan, putting him in a race against time to recover.

As a pivotal player in Carlo Ancelotti's squad, Paqueta's absence could significantly impact Brazil's chances in the tournament. He was forced to leave the field at half-time during the team's 2-1 victory over Japan.

According to a statement from Brazil's Football Confederation (CBF), "Paqueta underwent imaging tests that confirmed a muscle injury in the back of his left thigh. He will follow an intensive treatment regimen under the guidance of the national team's medical staff, aiming for a swift recovery and return to play."

Paqueta has already been ruled out of Brazil's upcoming Round of 16 match against Norway in New Jersey on Sunday (local time). Reports indicate he has sustained a grade-two strain, which could keep him sidelined for about three weeks, raising doubts about his participation in the remainder of the World Cup.

Brazil's Thrilling Victory Against Japan

In the Round of 32 match against Japan, Brazil secured a dramatic 2-1 victory, thanks to a last-minute goal from Gabriel Martinelli. The match showcased Brazil's resilience as they mounted a thrilling comeback in the second half.

Japan initially shocked the five-time world champions when Kaishu Sano intercepted a loose ball and executed a remarkable 40-yard solo run, scoring to put Japan ahead 1-0.

Despite a challenging first half where Japan's goalkeeper Zion Suzuki was largely untested, Brazil increased their efforts in the second half. Gabriel Magalhaes delivered a precise cross that allowed veteran midfielder Casemiro to equalize with a powerful header.

As the match appeared to be heading for extra time, Danilo regained possession and found Endrick, who assisted Bruno Guimaraes. Guimaraes then set up an unmarked Gabriel Martinelli, who calmly slotted the ball into the far corner, securing Brazil's 2-1 win.
