Ruben Amorim is reportedly very enthusiastic about a defender he previously coached at Manchester United and has already initiated contact to bring him to AC Milan.
Amorim took charge as Milan’s head coach in mid-June, marking his first managerial role since leaving United. Reports have already emerged suggesting that he may look to his former club to strengthen the Serie A side’s squad.
The Portuguese manager has long been an admirer of Mason Mount, and after recent speculation linking the midfielder with a move to Milan, Amorim is now said to be targeting another of his former United players.
According to Italian journalist Antonio Vitiello, Amorim is particularly interested in two defenders: Lisandro Martinez and Goncalo Inacio.
It is understood that Amorim hopes to secure one of the two defenders for Milan, and initial discussions have already taken place to assess the feasibility of such transfers.
Martinez featured only 24 times under Amorim at United due to injury setbacks, yet he appears to have left a strong impression on the coach. Amorim is also fond of Inacio, who made 186 appearances under him at Sporting CP — the third-highest number among players managed by the Portuguese boss.
It remains uncertain whether Amorim’s pursuit of Martinez will bear fruit, especially as United are expected to retain the Argentine defender to avoid the need for another defensive signing, with the club’s focus currently on strengthening the midfield.
However, one move that will not materialise is Mason Mount’s transfer to Milan, despite his underwhelming 2025/26 season.
Chris Wheeler, a journalist well-versed in Manchester United affairs, explained: “Manchester United have no plans to sell Mason Mount this summer, despite rumours in Italy suggesting AC Milan could table a £21.5 million offer for the player.”
He added: “Reports have claimed that Mount was offered to Milan and that former United manager Ruben Amorim is keen to take him to San Siro.”
“However, United are unaware of any discussions regarding the 27-year-old and have no intentions of offloading him.”
“It’s also understood that Mount himself has no desire to leave Old Trafford. He has been in Spain working with a personal coach on an individual fitness plan to ensure he is fully prepared for pre-season training next week.”
Amorim has already kicked off his Milan tenure with the record signing of striker Goncalo Ramos, and reports indicate that further high-profile additions may soon follow.
