Bukayo Saka’s World Cup campaign has been far from smooth, with the Arsenal winger struggling for consistent playing time due to fitness concerns.

The forward has started only once so far in the tournament — during England’s 2-0 victory over Panama — while making substitute appearances against Croatia and Ghana. His limited involvement has sparked questions about his physical condition.

In recent months, Saka has faced repeated fitness challenges. Towards the end of the club season, Arsenal carefully managed his return from a hamstring injury. The 24-year-old even admitted he had been “taking a gamble” with his fitness while representing England.

As a result, Saka has been closely monitored by the England coaching staff. He has been engaging in individual training sessions, with his match workload being deliberately reduced to ensure he remains available for the later stages of the World Cup.

Arsenal teammate Noni Madueke is set to start in Saka’s place against DR Congo, further fuelling speculation that the winger has yet to regain full fitness. The decision indicates that England remain cautious about pushing Saka through a full 90 minutes at this stage of the competition.

Speaking before the Panama match, England manager Thomas Tuchel offered an update on Saka’s fitness, saying, “He seems to be getting closer to full readiness and hopefully will be able to push on. We’ll have to see.”

Tuchel continued, “It’s not as simple as Bukayo coming back and everything being fixed. I don’t want to pile that pressure on him. He’s a top player, which is why he’s here with us, and he will get his minutes. We need him, just like every other player, to be in peak condition.”

“Everyone is doing their best, and this isn’t the time to single out individuals. We’re in a good position overall,” he added.

Despite limited minutes, Saka has already contributed two assists in three World Cup appearances, underlining his value to the England squad. If called upon from the bench against DR Congo, he could once again make a decisive impact as England look to secure a place in the round of 16, where a potential meeting with Mexico awaits.
