Declan Rice has already proven himself to be “world-class,” according to former Arsenal midfielder Stefan Schwarz, who believes the Gunners’ standout performer possesses a rare quality that could one day see him lift the Ballon d’Or. The England international continues his pursuit of that prestigious honour while targeting further major success for both club and country.

After completing a record-breaking £105 million ($139m) transfer from West Ham United to Arsenal in 2023, Rice made it clear he was driven by the desire to win top-level trophies. The midfielder enjoyed UEFA Conference League success as captain of the Hammers before going on to claim the Premier League title with Arsenal in the 2025-26 season. He also featured in the Champions League final, further establishing himself as one of England’s most influential midfielders and a potential future captain of the national team.

While Harry Kane currently holds the England captaincy, Rice continues to chase World Cup glory in North America. Should he lead his nation to that long-awaited triumph, the 27-year-old would become a strong favourite for the Golden Ball and a legitimate candidate for the title of ‘best player in the world.’

When asked whether Rice has what it takes to reach such heights, former Arsenal player Stefan Schwarz, speaking about early Ballon d’Or predictions for Rice, told GOAL: “He’s already world-class. You can see his influence whenever Arsenal or England play.”

Schwarz added, “He’s not just focused on his own performances. Of course, he’s consistently excellent, but what makes him special is how he elevates those around him with his leadership, communication, and presence on the pitch. He’s a fantastic leader — exactly the kind of player every successful team needs.”

Rice has drawn comparisons to some of England’s most iconic midfielders from recent decades, with his ability to inspire teammates placing him among the elite. Former England international Peter Reid told GOAL: “He has a massive influence on the pitch. Top player, top player. Bryan Robson was a top player, and if I’m mentioning them in the same breath, that shows how highly I rate Declan Rice. He’s a terrific footballer. People compare him to Bryan Robson, and rightly so — he’s at that level.”

Reid continued, “Steven Gerrard was an outstanding footballer, absolutely brilliant. Rice belongs among that top tier of midfielders — complete in every aspect: winning the ball, distributing it, reading the game, defending, and attacking. You can’t ask for more.”

Another former Arsenal midfielder, Henri Lansbury, also praised Rice’s growing influence, comparing him to another legendary Premier League captain. Speaking to GOAL, Lansbury said: “It’s a big statement to say he’s the best in the world, but he’s definitely among the best. He’s taken ownership of that midfield role and looks phenomenal in this Arsenal side.”

He added, “I’d love to see him given the captain’s armband and made the focal point of the team. He’s got that Roy Keane-like presence — the kind of authority that can drive a team forward and take them to another level.”

Currently, Rice is showcasing his leadership and all-round ability on the biggest international stage, having recovered from a minor injury to be in contention for a starting spot in England’s World Cup last-32 match against DR Congo on Wednesday. If his set-piece expertise and commanding performances continue, Rice’s reputation will only grow stronger as he cements his place among football’s global elite.
