England survived a major scare to reach the FIFA World Cup Round of 16, coming from behind to defeat DR Congo 2-1 thanks to two late goals from captain Harry Kane.
The Democratic Republic of the Congo made a dream start when Brian Cipenga scored in the seventh minute after England failed to deal with a cross into the penalty area. The early goal put England under immediate pressure and gave the underdogs confidence throughout the opening half.
Despite controlling much of the possession, England struggled to convert their chances. DR Congo goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi delivered an outstanding performance before the break, producing several important saves to deny Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane. England also believed they should have been awarded a penalty after Kane was brought down in the box, but the referee waved play on.
Manager Thomas Tuchel made attacking substitutions in the second half as England searched for an equaliser. The changes proved decisive when Anthony Gordon delivered a cross that Kane headed home in the 75th minute.
With momentum on their side, England continued to push forward. Four minutes from time, Kane collected a pass inside the penalty area, created space for himself and fired a powerful finish into the roof of the net to complete the comeback.
The victory sends England into the Round of 16, where they will face Mexico. While the result keeps their World Cup hopes alive, England will know they must improve defensively after a performance that exposed several weaknesses despite the dramatic win.
